Comparative Constitutional Law

4 ECTS / Semester / English

This course will provide an introduction to seminal themes and topics in the field of comparative constitutional law. Studying constitutions in a comparative light is of greater than ever importance today, as we witness increases in the international movement of people, capital, goods, ideas and information. Constitutional traditions borrow concepts from each other, not to mention structures and, occasionally, even language. To think comparatively about these concepts and structures is to think critically about them, and about the values that underpin our societies today. Constitutional law is the foundation of the law in most legal systems and one cannot have a proper understanding of any foreign private, commercial and criminal law without understanding the fundamental differences (and similarities) in the legal foundations. Students will be able to understand how to approach to foreign constitutional sources, cases in particular.
