Tax law is one of the areas of legal practice that has developed the most in recent years in Portugal. The increasing sophistication of tax law and the growing internationalisation of Portuguese companies have led to the development, within the main law firms, of teams specialised in tax law. At the same time, in Portugal, tax law consultancy has been one of the most prolific areas in terms of job vacancies for legal practitioners who have recently graduated. It enables them to develop careers in which they are permanently in touch with international tax law.

The Master of Laws - Taxation at Católica | Lisbon School of Law was designed with the professional world of tax law in mind, and therefore makes us think beyond it. In close contact with the corporate world, it includes a profound study of issues that are crucial for those who wish to work with tax law on a daily basis, from value added tax (or “IVA”) to international tax law. Innovative seminar topics follow the core academic background, broadening horizons and helping to deal with what is different – be it issues regarding energy and environmental tax law, or the fiscal treatment of the most sophisticated financial products.

The Master of Laws - Taxation at Católica | Lisbon School of Law is partly taught in Portuguese and partly taught in English, because these languages correspond to the skills that a young tax law professional is currently expected to have. It is a Master’s degree programme that encourages debate, collective work, and arguing based on a concrete case. It therefore ends with the analysis of the most recent European “case law” regarding direct and indirect tax law.
