On completion of this course students should understand and be able to critically analyse, research and apply the following knowledge: the theories, history, politics and practice of ESC rights as part of international human rights law; the role of governments and other actors in implementing, monitoring and adjudicating ESC rights at State level; the tools that the United Nations, at universal level, has developed to monitor ESC rights, and to ensure their progressive development; the role ESC rights play in the debates concerning the North-South divide and the duties of international development and cooperation of the rich States towards the poorer States; the role of companies in the fulfilment of ESC rights and the regulation of corporate conduct; the links between ESC rights and development cooperation; the role of indicators in monitoring progress in the fulfillment of ESC rights; the interrelatedness been all human rights and specificities of particular ESC rights, as the human rights to food, water and sanitation, health care, housing, among others.
