União de Direito e Mercado Digital Sustentável
Tópicos de pesquisa
This research group intends to address some of the main concerns of the European agenda - EU rule of law, internal digital and sustainable market and migration. - focusing on three main areas with high academic relevance as well as societal impact.
First, this group will attend the concerns with the democratic breakdown following the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine- Russia war, the systemic failure of representative democracy and the electoral success of populist parties; all trigger the quality of democracy and human rights enforcement in Europe. It intends, therefore, to study and test new legal models capable of improving democracy and to support the Union's external security policies, through conflict prevention and peace building.
In addition, the second research area will focus the EU legal migration policy. The recent New Pact on Migration and Asylum attempts to address the longstanding challenges surrounding migration and asylum policies within the EU and will require an updated analysis of the legal frameworks governing migration.
Thirdly, this group will explore the topic of a digital and sustainable internal market. It is one of the priorities of the European Commission, It will help consumers and companies, promote economic growth and ensuring sustainability goals.
To pursue these goals, this group intends to continue the development of projects, funded by the European Commission, such as the enlargement of the observatory on EU law, and and will endeavour to develop large-scale research projects such as the co-coordination of an ambitious Encyclopedia in Competition Law EU (with researchers from the University of Bocconi and Radboud University Nijmegen) to published by Elgar, co-editing of Handbook on Human Rights and Migration, published by Elgar, and the editing of the first Portuguese Military Handbook, defining how the Portuguese military should proceed in an international military context, to reinforce the rule of law.
Therefore, the group will promote: (1) theoretical interdisciplinary and transnational research (2) best practices in a transnational context will be encouraged (3) consolidation of cooperation networks (4) strengthening of teaching activities (workshops, seminars, and conferences) (5) Findings will be published in open access journal articles in peer-reviewed journals and in peer-reviewed edited books.
